SUBCO Increases Spectrum Investment on Indigo West Cable System

Brisbane, Australia – 29th February 2024 – SUBCO today announced that it has acquired additional spectrum on the Indigo West cable system from an existing consortium member. The acquisition of spectrum is in addition to SUBCO’s existing spectrum holdings and will provide an additional 35% spectral availability to the company on the Indigo West system and will be available next month along with 400G waves.

SUBCO’s Founder Bevan Slattery said, “Indigo West has been an amazing performing asset for the group, so much so that with current customer demand, we were on track to run out of capacity over the next 6 months. The increase in our spectrum holdings on this high demand route could not have come at a better time.”

Importantly, the acquisition of the spectrum is contiguous to SUBCO’s existing spectrum which is critical when looking to leverage next generation coherent technologies which require wider channels to improve spectral efficiency.

“We have worked closely with the major SLTE vendors to ensure we acquired the exact amount of spectrum which will deliver the absolute maximum capacity possible with next generation cards. While we have increased our spectral capacity by approximately 35%, we expect this will deliver a 60% increase in wave capacity with the next generation of transponders. This translates to an additional 3Tbps of capacity will be incredibly useful with no incremental systems expected to be installed before 2028.”

Additionally, SUBCO also secured an option to acquire further spectrum on the Indigo Central system (between Perth and Sydney) which will provide route protection for the upcoming SMAP system which is expected to go live in Q1 2026.
