Overview

Sydney <> Perth

A new transcontinental submarine cable system connecting Sydney, Melbourne (Torquay), Adelaide and Perth (S-M-A-P), SMAP will utilise 12 fibre pairs, full armouring and space division multiplexing (SDM) technology to deliver secure, low latency and extremely energy efficient connectivity to Australia’s capitals.

Energy Efficiency

With 12 fibre pairs and the use of Space Division Multiplexing (SDM) technology, SMAP will deliver over 300Tb/s per section at an extraordinary 15Tb/KW. 25x more efficient than the existing legacy terrestrial inter-capital systems.

Performance & Security

As the first fully armoured long-haul cable system in Australia, SMAP is best protected from unplanned outages. As such, it is expected to deliver the highest uptime and level of security of any Australian long-haul submarine cable system.

Zero Carbon Footprint

SMAP is positioned to become the world’s first zero carbon long-haul subsea cable system. This is to be achieved by installing solar and renewable infrastructure at all landing station locations and purchasing 100% renewable energy.

Australia’s digital future starts here

The SMAP Cable marks the first stage of construction of HyperOne, which is set to become Australia’s first national fibre backhaul network. Once built, HyperOne will be a 100% Australian owned and operated telecommunications network that boasts up to 10x the fibre capacity of existing networks and delivers more than 2,000 off-ramps for regional and remote connectivity, providing a true national backbone for every state and territory.
